Background of the Study
The proliferation of small arms is a critical security issue that has far-reaching implications for public safety. In Ijebu East Local Government Area, Ogun State, the widespread availability of firearms has been linked to an increase in violent crimes and general insecurity. Studies have shown that the easy access to small arms not only facilitates criminal activities but also intensifies conflicts and contributes to a climate of fear among residents (Afolabi, 2023). The illegal arms trade, coupled with inadequate regulatory controls, has resulted in the circulation of unregistered and unauthorized firearms within communities. These factors significantly complicate the efforts of law enforcement agencies to maintain order and ensure public safety (Babatunde, 2024). Moreover, the presence of small arms increases the lethality of criminal encounters and can escalate minor disputes into deadly confrontations. This study seeks to examine the impact of small arms proliferation on the overall security situation in Ijebu East. By analyzing crime data, conducting field interviews, and reviewing policy frameworks, the research aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of how small arms contribute to insecurity and to propose measures to control their proliferation (Ogunleye, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
In Ijebu East, the proliferation of small arms poses a significant threat to public security, yet there is limited research that quantifies its impact (Oluwaseun, 2023). The ease of access to unauthorized firearms has been linked to rising violent crimes, creating an environment of heightened fear and instability. Despite governmental efforts to regulate arms possession, the persistence of illegal arms markets undermines these initiatives. This gap in empirical research makes it difficult for law enforcement and policymakers to develop effective strategies to curb small arms proliferation. A comprehensive investigation is essential to understand the extent to which small arms contribute to local insecurity and to formulate actionable recommendations for enhanced security measures (Ijeoma, 2024).
Objectives of the Study:
To determine the extent of small arms proliferation in Ijebu East.
To assess the impact of small arms on local security and crime rates.
To propose effective strategies for controlling small arms proliferation.
Research Questions:
What is the prevalence of small arms in Ijebu East Local Government Area?
How does the proliferation of small arms affect the incidence of violent crimes?
What measures can effectively reduce the circulation of unauthorized firearms?
Research Hypotheses:
H1: The proliferation of small arms is significantly associated with increased violent crime rates.
H2: Inadequate arms regulation contributes to the widespread availability of small arms.
H3: Strengthening regulatory frameworks reduces small arms-related insecurity.
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it evaluates the impact of small arms proliferation on security in Ijebu East, Ogun State. Its findings will support law enforcement and policymakers in developing targeted interventions to control illegal firearms and enhance public safety. The research contributes to a safer community environment by providing evidence-based recommendations for regulating arms possession and curbing violent crimes (Afolabi, 2023).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to investigating the impact of small arms proliferation on security in Ijebu East Local Government Area, Ogun State. It focuses solely on local arms-related issues without extending to national or international arms trade dynamics.
Definitions of Terms:
Small Arms: Handheld firearms such as pistols, rifles, and submachine guns.
Proliferation: The rapid increase or spread of something, particularly weapons.
